A 30-Minute Evening Wind-Down Routine You Can Actually Keep

A good routine is not long or fancy. It is short enough to repeat even on tired days. The plan below takes 30 minutes and uses only things most people already have at home. Adjust the order and the details so it fits your life.
Minutes 0 to 5: close the day
Write tomorrow's top three tasks and anything you are worried about, then close the notebook. Turn off work email and put your phone on its charger outside the bed area. This clear ending tells your brain that the workday is finished.
Minutes 5 to 10: dim and tidy
Switch off bright overhead lights and use one or two warm lamps. Do a quick tidy of the bedroom, lay out clothes for tomorrow, and set the temperature a little cooler. Small environmental changes add up.
Minutes 10 to 20: warm up and stretch
A warm shower or bath about an hour before bed can help, because the drop in body temperature afterward is associated with feeling sleepy. Follow it with five minutes of gentle stretching for your neck, shoulders, hips and calves.
Minutes 20 to 30: quiet attention
Read a few pages of a paper book, listen to slow ambient music, or do slow breathing in bed. Choose something that is calm and not too exciting. When your eyelids feel heavy, turn off the lamp.
Make it stick
- Start with only the steps you enjoy, and add others later.
- Link the routine to something you already do, like brushing your teeth.
- Keep the same order on most nights so the cues become automatic.
- If you miss a night, simply return to it the next evening.
